Solar Energy - How does solar power work?

The essential parts of a Solar energy system are the Sun, Photovoltaic panels, commonly known as solar panels and an Inverter.

The Solar panels contain silicon semiconductors. The suns rays are then absorbed by the panels. The rays contain photons, which interact with the semiconductors and this creates an electrical DC or Direct Current.

This current is then processed by an inverter, which converts the DC into AC. AC stands for alternating current. All our usable domestic electricity requires AC, so the raw DC produced by the photovoltaic panels needs to be processed in this way by the inverter.


We can then choose how we use this energy, by direct use, by storing it, or by placing it back in to our countries national power grid system.
